BIG MITTEN ENERGY CENTER

Reliable Power for Michigan's Future

Strengthening our grid, supporting your community, and protecting what makes Colfax Township home.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The Big Mitten Energy Center is a proposed Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) that will store electricity when demand is low and deliver it back to the grid when demand is high, helping keep power reliable and affordable across Michigan.  Residents of Colfax Township reap additional benefits from the dollars that will flow into the community from this project.

Located in Colfax Township, the project will use a small, carefully designed site to deliver major reliability benefits for homes, farms, and local businesses. Energy storage facilities like this one help reduce strain on the grid during peak hours, prevent outages, and make Michigan’s energy supply more resilient and independent.

The project is being developed with a focus on safety, transparency, and local partnership, including coordination with nearby emergency services and adherence to all state and national safety standards.

Lights stay on. Energy stays affordable. Communities stay strong.

ABOUT ENERGY STORAGE

Battery energy storage is the backbone of a modern, reliable grid. By storing electricity during low-demand hours and releasing it when the grid needs support, systems like the Big Mitten Energy Center help keep power steady and affordable across Michigan, without increasing generation or using additional natural resources.

COMMUNITY BENEFITS

The Big Mitten Energy Center brings long-term value to Colfax Township. Once operational, it will contribute significant local tax dollars, support essential services like schools and first responders, and improve the reliability of everyday power, all with a small physical footprint and virtually no ongoing resource use.

SAFETY AND STEWARDSHIP

Safety is built into every part of the Big Mitten Energy Center. The facility will meet UL 9540, NFPA 855, and all other local, state, and national standards, with 24/7 monitoring and coordination with local emergency services. It operates with no emissions, no water use, and is designed for full decommissioning and site restoration at the end of its lifespan.
